Years ago, I was a coffee person. Everyday, I drank many cups of coffee. Still, when I became pregnant with our first child, I stopped. Somehow, I knew all that caffeine was probably not good for a growing baby. Although I still have a very occasional cup of coffee, I now drink tea. If you are also a tea person, consider checking out this company.
So who is Arbor Teas? We’re a husband and wife team of tea enthusiasts with a lot of passion. Passion for top quality teas, of course, but also the environment, fair trade, and our community (and lots of others things, too, like good friends, family, world travel, themed parties, and sushi). We started Arbor Teas (formerly New World Tea) in our hometown of Ann Arbor, Michigan, intent on creating a tea company as passionate as we are. And, while our company has grown a bit since its humble beginnings (our first website was built in exchange for painting our friend Lawrence’s kitchen!), the passion remains to this day.
Our passion is reflected in every aspect of Arbor Teas. You’ll certainly notice it in the exceptional collection of teas we offer – one of the largest catalogs of USDA certified organic teas around, nearly three-quarters of which are Fair Trade Certified®. But our passion can also be seen in the extensive collection of informative content provided on our Tea Blog and Tea Fun pages as well as our dedication to prompt, thorough and friendly consumer service.
Arbor Tea uses eco-friendly packaging.
We teamed up with a group of graduate students studying Industrial Ecology at the University of Michigan’s School of Natural Resources and Environment to evaluate the environmental impact of our previous packaging and look at greener alternatives. Our previous packaging involved a combination of tin-plated steel canisters (an old standby in the tea industry) and glassine-lined paper bags. As it turned out, the steel tins we used were no friend of the environment, but our paper bags were actually pretty good. In response to this news, we kept our glassine-lined paper bags, but replaced our steel tins with recyclable, parchment-lined paperboard canisters. They’ll keep your tea safe and sound while generating less than one-fifth of the carbon emission of the traditional tea tin (not to mention generating far less water and air pollution)!
The available products are divided into categories: fair trade tea, tea by variety (black oolong, green, white, pu-erh, rooibos, herbal), tea by origin, tea by flavor/aroma, decaf/caffeine free, tea for iced tea, tea for children, tea samplers, tea of the month club, world tour club, teapots and tea cups, travel and desk mugs, infusers and accessories, books, apparel, gift sets, and sale items.
Arbor Teas is very socially responsible.
We moved back to our hometown and set up shop because Ann Arbor [MI] is one of the special places in the world that shares our commitment to sustainability, equity and authenticity. In exchange for offering such a wonderful, nurturing environment in which to develop our business, Arbor Teas is committed to giving back to its local community. Although our products come from all corners of the globe, we shop locally for the services and goods we require to conduct business. Whenever possible, we support community-based initiatives by donating products and services, and sponsor groups and activities like the Arbor Teas Softball Team.
