Darwin Design Clothing Company: Eco-Friendly Clothing

One day, when Otto Pohl was discussing global warming with his wife, Anne Sherwood, he noted that the

phrase, “Stop Global Warming,” sends a negative message. Anne suggested rewriting the message – “Start Global Cooling.”

We thought it was a great way to capture the optimism often lacking in global warming discussions. Going green is a huge opportunity for our country, not a threat! So we printed a few shirts and brought them to the Bozeman Farmer’s Market. We nearly sold out the first morning. We realized we were on to something. We wanted to make a difference. We came up with a few more shirt styles and began donating to the Earth Island Institute and American Wildlands.

The shirts are available in a number of different colors and designs. They feature animals – African penguin, Arctic polar bear, Bengal tiger, red-eyed tree frog, blue whale, and green sea turtle – whose ecosystems are threatened by global warming.

From the Arctic to the rain forest and from the oceans to the jungle, these animals highlight the potential catastrophe that awaits us if we don’t reduce the human impact on our ever-changing world.

Otto and Anne hope that their shirts are billboards for change. They are donating 10 percent of proceeds to the previously noted Earth Institute Island and American Wildlands.

The Earth Island Institute (EII), founded in 1982 by veteran environmentalist David Brower, fosters the efforts of creative individuals by providing organizational support in developing projects for the conservation, preservation, and restoration of the global environment. EII provides activists the freedom to develop program ideas, supported by services to help them pursue those ideas, with a minimum of bureaucracy.

For almost 30 years, American Wildlands has fought to protect wild America throughout the western states. They seek the protection for the West’s wild places and advocates for the careful management of its natural resources. AWL keeps the world-renowned U.S. Northern Rockies ecologically intact by restoring and maintaining connections between key habitats for healthy populations of native fish and wildlife.
