Until Randall Health, the owner of Coldsweep, contacted me, I had never heard of using dry ice made from recycled CO2 to clean many surfaces. But, that is exactly what his company does.
The dry ice sublimates (turns from a solid to a gas on impact) so it does not create any
secondary waste. Dry ice blasting can replace the use of chemicals, paint strippers, and other harmful solvents. In the fall of 2007, Startup Nation named Coldsweep one of the greenest small businesses in the U.S. Why? Because, “we are able to clean a wide variety of surfaces using a recycled material that disappears on impact. How cool is that!”
As for giving back to the community, our efforts in that direction are rather spontaneous. This week we are cleaning portions of a shipwreck for a museum in Maine at no cost. Last year, we removed graffiti from the Salt Lake City library (7 floors up) after vandals rappelled over the edge tag the side of the building. The year before that we dry ice blasted ½-inch of char from a pioneer-era log cabin for a city park. Last year, we sponsored a “Live Green’ event in Salt Lake City. No rhyme or reason to our giving. We just do it if it seems like the right thing to do, especially if no one else has the capability to do it.
