Maggie’s Soap Nuts: Unique Detergent

Have you ever heard of cleaning with soap nuts? I certainly hadn’t. Until, one day, boxes of Maggie’s Soap Nuts appeared on a shelf of our nearby health food store. Since the

package indicates that the company donates 10 percent of its net proceeds “to groups that improve the lives of mothers, children and support a happy, Pure Planet Earth,” I had to investigate further.

Maggie’s Soap Nuts are the only laundry soap that grows on trees. Truly effective. 100% natural and safe for your most sensitive skin.

Where in the world does Maggie get those soap nuts?

Maggie’s Soap Nuts: Unique Detergent

Maggie’s Soap Nuts are the dried fruit of the Chinese Soapberry Tree…. (They) are harvested in Indian and Indonesian jungles where Soap Nut trees are holding forests and families together!. Our Soap Nuts fall to the ground where they are collected by local folks who have used them for centuries.

How do Soap Nuts work?

Maggie’s Soap Nuts work like a detergent. They contain saponin, an all-natural surfactant…. Surfactants work by breaking the surface of water so it can more easily penetrate into fabrics, effectively making water ‘wetter.’ Once wet, the agitation of your washing machine (or your hands) shakes the dirt loose from your clothes. Then Soap Nuts’ saponin holds the dirt in suspension in the water (preventing it from re-depositing on your clothes) until you’ve rinsed it away.

And, since Maggie’s Soap Nuts are low-sudsing, they are ideal for those of us with high-efficiency washers.
